History of Wahiawa

Wahiawa is a census-designated place (CDP) in Honolulu County, Hawaii, United States. The population was 34,513 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern side of the island of Oahu and is bordered to the east by Wahiawa Stream and to the north and west by Nuuanu Valley. Wahiaawa Stream forms part of the border between Wahiawa and Waialua CDPs.

The first settlers in what would become Wahiawa were Native Hawaiians who arrived sometime before 1795. They built an irrigation system that enabled them to cultivate taro and other crops. In 1823, King Kamehameha III granted land in Wahiawa to Isaac Davis and his wife, Esther Kahanamoku; this became known as the Davis Estate. The estate was eventually passed down to their son Moses Davis, who began developing it into a plantation.

With the arrival of American missionaries in 1835, Wahiawa began to develop as a community focused on Christianity. The missionaries built several schools and churches, and many early residents were baptized into the faith. By 1850, there were approximately 100 Americans living in Wahiawa.
