One family member, a 40-year-old man, was unable to walk out of the crater and was carried\u00a0three\u00a0miles to the\u00a0Haleakal\u0101\u00a0Visitor Center by NPS\u00a0staff, where he was evaluated by waiting paramedics. <\/p>\n<p>All members of the family declined medical care.<\/p>\n<div class=\"adBreak mobile-only\"><span><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThanks to a large team of hardworking first responders, tragedy was averted,\u201d said Superintendent Natalie Gates. Chief Ranger Ari Wong added, \u201cVisitors to our remote backcountry, whether they are locals or off-island tourists, need to be prepared for changing and challenging conditions.
